Now that school has been going on for over a month now, are you feeling comfortable with how your child is achieving both in the classroom and at home? Do you see any red flags that concern you?
I remember realizing that my son was struggling with executive functioning. He had no support except me. So that meant I actually was enabling him by helping him with his homework. And helping also meant actually doing the homework for him! I didn’t want him to feel bad or look bad in front of his peers or teacher.
Obviously that was a mistake for sure and early on in my journey of advocacy. What I learned was that accommodations and modifications were definitely needed to aid in his organization and homework completion. Also, with testing, there also might need to be a remediation for a learning disability.
Many believe that executive functioning shouldn’t be a problem and that with maturity, it improves. That is so not true when it comes to a child with ADHD! Support is needed for success!
