Dealing with schools to help your child with ADHD can be frustrating and disappointing. I think a main contributor is the behavior that creates chaos in the classroom. When a child with ADHD is not supported, he/she is not being provided FAPE, free and appropriate public education, which is mandated by the IDEA, the federal law providing needed special ed services.
I hear so many times that when a child misbehaves, the teacher calls the parent. Or the administration demands the parent to come and pick up the child. They believe that behavior can be controlled and that YOU, the parent, should be able to make that happen!
We know that behavior resulting from a diagnosis of ADHD could have many causes and needs support.
I remember when my son was young and creating havoc in the classroom!! It was important to discover all the reasons behind it and provide support! Without support, your child will continue to not access education and receive negative consequences for actions. That only serves to provide a vicious circle of negativity and low self-esteem! And remember, the behavior doesn’t have to represent loud and boisterous behavior! Behavior preventing access to education could include daydreaming, lack of focus.
