I recently had a client whose child was having behaviors in the classroom that were somewhat disruptive. He did not have any support in place. His diagnoses happen to be autism and adhd. Let me explain the journey of nonsense that occurred:
- The child was “disengaged” and was playing with another child right before lunch. He apparently did not listen to the teacher. Following this he went to lunch.
- After lunch he was sent to principal for a recess detention. He was also made to apologize!
- He was sent back to class to again find himself in trouble once again. Another child’s folder touched his and he became angry and threw it.
- Once again, he was pulled out of class and sent to the principal’s office. At some point he somehow got out of the building, asking for his mom.
The child’s mom had previously asked for a complete psychoeducational evaluation and FBA. Verbally the school agreed but had made no moves. Now, the teacher clearly did not know how to handle these behaviors. What was being done only served to create confusion, stress, and danger for this child.
What was wrong with this picture? And what should the parent have done as a result of these ineffective interventions by both teacher and administrator??
Please sign up for a consult on my website so I can send you not only steps that the mom needed to follow but also how these interventions only served to escalate behavior and lower this child’s self-esteem!
Let’s talk if you are finding yourself in the same position as this mom! Behavior can be a big part of ADHD. Sadly, it seems to always be assumed that behaviors can be controlled. They are intentional and can be improved. Of course they can be improved, but not without support! ADHD is a medical disability with symptoms that do impact success in the classroom!
