ADHD and Behavior in the Classroom

ADHD and Behavior in the Classroom

Combined ADHD consists of many symptoms including impulsivity, inattentiveness,  and hyperactivity.  Many times, without effective support, our kids with ADHD cannot access their education.  Sadly, many do not understand ADHD and believe that when behaviors are the center of struggles, they should be able to be controlled.  The belief is that those behaviors are intentional and therefore our kids receive punitive attention in the form of detention, suspensions, reduced play and free time. This is far from the truth and only enhances the negative behavior that is getting in their way. In addition, there are other areas that can certainly impact behavior that relate to sensory issues, bullying, and learning disabilities.

It’s so important for parents to understand the importance of collecting data in order to understand how to support their child.  Collecting this data through psychoeducational evaluations and functional behavioral assessments will provide important information around how your child learns as well as triggers to the negative behavior.  All of this then can be used for the goals in the IEP and positive behavioral plans.  Without adequate support, our children do not receive FAPE, Free and Appropriate Public Education, that is mandated by special ed law, IDEA.

Communication between school and home is paramount to know that support set in place is effective.

Reach out for a free 20 minute consult if the above resonates with you!  I know how difficult this part of ADHD is having lived this journey with my youngest.  It is such an isolating feeling; that feeling that parents and teachers are silently judging you as a parent; mistakenly feeling that if you the parent knew how to parent, their child would not behave this way.  Nothing could be farther from the truth!  That feeling of isolation is felt too by that child.  Our kids with ADHD are so sensitive and perceptive.  They know when they are being rejected.  Let’s talk!  I have walked this journey and know things can be better!
